What’s on!

Once again our key objective is to help change behaviour in the local community and encourage more active travel to improve health and wellbeing and to reduce car usage by:

  • increasing awareness of the active travel options and routes available to visit Chester
  • showcasing organisations that can provide information, advice and support in making this change
  • making the journey into the city part of the fun and providing interest and entertainment in the city centre.

In Townhall Square at 10.00am you can enjoy the departure of the Glamourous Gals and Dapper Chaps, as they head off around Chester to celebrate the fun of cycling.

Around the square you will find our many partners promoting cycling and walking as a practical option for local travel and showcasing how they can provide practical support and information to support this change. This will include a wide range of specialist and adapted cycle option for those with special requirements and needs.

There will be practical support and advice from the Police on safety and security, from the local NHS Partnership on Health and Wellbeing and the Bike Factory will offer a free Dr Bike service and provide information on specialist cycling accessories.

In addition the family can enjoy bike decorating, the Kiddies Zone and get your face painted or hair braided

Between stunt bike shows why not enjoy a Dance Workshop.

In Storyhouse

From 10.00 bring along the family to enjoy kiddies craft activities in the Kitchen café area; with badge making, wheel weaving, colouring and quizzes.

Be inspired and entertained by Professor Peter Cox, retired professor of sociology at the University of Chester, as he shares his thoughts on the importance of Active Travel. The event will be hosted by Oliver Hill, Storyhouse’s Director of Operations and cycling enthusiast. Tickets can booked at https://www.storyhouse.com/whats-on/walking-cycling-and-citizenship-for-sustainability/

Peter Cox’s extensive research has focused on cycling mobilities, crossing disciplines from sociology to post-development studies, connecting both cultural and political perspectives and led to work with organizations ranging from local activists to intergovernmental agencies. “My current project explores how practical experiences of cycling and other forms of active travel can build values and sensitivities required for rethinking citizenship at a time when humans are having such a substantial impact on our planet.”

In the new Market come and listen to one of two specialist demonstrations by Cycle Mechanic and professional performer and entertainer Soloman Adams.

Chester Green Weekend is a new event to Chester which will be part of the national Great Big Green Week. It has come from a collaboration of Chester Great and Small Ambassadors who are responsible for various sustainable activities, including the Active Travel Festival, Green Expo, Sustainable Cheshire Fair (Eco Communities) and the oH design Foundation. With the fantastic help of We love Good Times and Reasonably Good.

Lots of fun activities will be taking place around Chester City Centre and in Grosvenor Park over the weekend 15th and 16th June with an underlying aim of raising awareness of what we can all do to improve our health and wellbeing and tackle the climate and nature emergency.

Activities, workshops, walks, stalls, food and entertainment will be available, all within the walkable City of Chester. We will be distributing 10,000 copies of a special Chester Green Weekend Map where organisations and businesses can promote what they are doing.

Grosvenor Park 15th and 16th June

The Sustainable Living Zone will be organised by Eco Communities who put on the Sustainable Fairs that we have enjoyed for several years in the park. You will find plenty of interesting artisan stalls and our first ever ‘Luggage Rummage’.

The Innovation Zone by Green Expo will move from Castle Drive to the park this year bringing you ideas of how to make your home more environmentally friendly and other opportunities for green innovation.

The Nature Zone will be full of family friendly fun activities from the likes of Chester Zoo and Cheshire Wildlife Trust.
